A Tradition of Beauty and Love
The collections of the University of Dayton’s Marian Library–International Marian Research Institute
include a Crèche Collection with several thousand nativities from around the world. These international
crèches show a variety of local customs and traditions. Nativity sets are a part of the story of how
Christianity has shaped the culture of people whose faith was captured by the good news of Christ’s birth
and presence among them. Nativity sets are also signs of the many ways in which human culture has helped
the message of God to be better understood and more gratefully cherished.
During each Christmas season, a number of crèches from the collection are exhibited here and throughout
the community, and in some far-flung places. This year, as the University Libraries together celebrate
the unprecedented gift of nativities from Australian collector Elisabeth van Mullekom, six thematic
displays will be available to the general public. A special family open house event is planned for
November 28th and children’s activities will be provided.
