The following list contains the top ten reasons given by both current and alumnus library student workers on why you should work at the library!

Jason (UD Alumnus) states: "The times that I spent at the University of Dayton-Roesch Library were some of the best of my college career. By working closely with the professional staff and patrons at the Roesch Library, I was able to develop invaluable research and people skills that I use on an every day basis. The professional, warm, and above all, friendly atmosphere at the Roesch Library helped make my job even more special. If it weren't for the experience and most importantly the people at the Roesch Library, I would not be in the position that I am today. I owe a heartfelt thanks to all of those at the library that helped make my time in Dayton even more special."
David Jason Phelps, Staff Assistant to Congressman Sherwood Boehlert

Leeann (UD Alumnus) states: "You quickly learn time management and how to prioritize your work. This is one big thing employers look for in an employee. (This topic has been brought up during every job interview I have had.) You develop great customer service skills. You get recognized and rewarded for the work you do. The library offers flexible hours and can work around your class schedule. You learn where everything is located in the library and how to use the resources available. This makes doing research for a term paper a lot easier."
Leeann Wenzlick, Associate Accounting Analyst for Kollmorgen Corporation

Colleen (UD Alumnus) states: "Well, I definitely learned how to think
quick on my feet, especially at the end of the semester! Working at the library
exposed me to several personality types... that was a definite plus in the business
world! The library was a great place to work and develop my researching
skills. The warm and fun loving personalities of my co-workers and supervisors made
the four years that I worked at the library a fun and enjoyable experience."
Colleen Jamison-Nelson, Accounting Administrator, Minnesota

Gretchen (current library assistant) states: "What I like about working in the library: I have become an expert on library searches; working at the circulation desk and OhioLINK has improved my communication skills; I get to know UD's professors better; I enjoy working with a variety of people from different backgrounds and walks of life; I love working and talking with the patrons; the library staff has become a part of my extended family."
Gretchen Stiglich, Senior - Elementary Education

Venessa (current library assistant) states: "After working at the library for nearly 3 years, I've come to the conclusion that it is the best place on campus to work. Almost every job responsibility is a mixture of 'work and play'. For instance, I have learned some valuable customer service skills working at the circulation desk. Besides this, everyone is bound to use the library at some point in their college career, so it is very likely that some of the people that you check books out to will be your friends. Another thing I have learned at the library is how to do good research. Working at the library also means that you will meet some really nice people. Everyone that works here is extremely friendly and the atmosphere is great to be around. I've enjoyed working with my friends that started working here, as well as meeting new ones."
Venessa Polak, Senior - English

Anand (UD Alumnus) states: "Being an international student and working in the Roesch Library has been an educational experience for me. Be it in Cataloging, Circulation/Periodicals, or Building Services, it has always been interesting and productive. All my coworkers are fun loving and team oriented. Working here has really helped me groom my verbal and communicative skills (also some American slangs!) What more, I have learned to be a good team player. I was able to make that successful transition into the college life at U.D. mainly because of the supportive and understanding personalities of my supervisors and coworkers. They all make my life at U.D. a memorable and pleasant one. I am really happy to be a part of this wonderful and appreciative Roesch Library family."
Anand Allolankandy, Materials Engineer, Cincinnati

Erin (current library assistant) states: "Working at the U.D. library has given me many life-applicable experiences. For example, I can apply my learned organizational skills in any future job. Just as well, I can use the people skills I've acquired on the job throughout the rest of my life. Most of all, as a student assistant at the library, I've learned that having a job which I enjoy is an achievable goal. Because of the caring, flexible staff, working while carrying a full load of classes is not an added stress. In fact, I've made more than a few life-long friends while working at the library."
Erin Biers, Senior - Biology

Becky (UD Alumnus) states: "I was a student worker at the Roesch Library during the last 2 years of my undergraduate study in elementary education, from 1992-94. I couldn't have chosen a more perfect job. I loved the quiet atmosphere up on the floors while I shelved books. It was like a safe haven where nobody could bother me. Shelving books, for me, was almost like a meditation. I was able to think, and sometimes listen to music on a walkman while getting the job done. The work of shelving is rhythmic, steady, and relaxing. I liked it so much, that this year ('98) while working on my Master's Degree I convinced them to let me work again parttime. Working in the library turned out to be very convenient for a student, as I would often stay and do research or study when my shift
ended. I have been teaching kindergarten now for four years and I love it, but to
tell the truth, working in the library was my favorite job of all time. It was
stress-free and very satisfying!"
Rebecca Jewell, Kindergarten Teacher

Susan (UD ALumnus) states: "I thoroughly enjoyed working at the library. I gained both knowledge and friendships from this experience. The entire library staff treated me as a person... not just an employee. Because of my flexible work schedule, I was able to work hours around my academic schedule. I worked in Buidling Services and there I became familiar with the shelving process of the books which made locating what I needed for class a lot easier and quicker. My major was Elementary Education and being familiar with the library's resources made it easier to find what I needed to make creative and efficient lesson
plans. As a graduate, this advantage will benefit me in my future visits to Roesch
Library, or any other library, as I continue my education."
Susan Phillips, Kindergarten Teacher

Padhu (UD alumnus) states: "I always enjoyed working at the Roesch Library as a member of the Building Services Team. The responsibilities of the job included shelving, shifting, and reading of books; mail services within the library; working on time cards and more. I received more satisfaction from shelving and especially from assisting the U.D. community in locating the books that they were having trouble finding. This gave me a great sense of accomplishment and service. There is very FRIENDLY ATMOSPHERE among the staff and co-workers as well as FLEXIBLE WORKING HOURS for the student assistants. One has to work here to believe the above highlighted words that are being repeated again and again in my co-workers' testimonies! On a personal note, as an international student, working here has helped me to adjust to the way of life in America and college. I appreciated the recognition program that gave other meritorious workers and me acknowledgment of our efforts. I am really proud to have been a part of the Roesch Library and a member of the Building Services Team!"
