Introduction

Dayton Bach Society

This collection of materials concerning the Dayton Bach Society (1974- ), a highly regarded semi-professional chorus, was donated by the founder, Dr. Richard P. Benedum. The files were received in 1992 and were completely processed on August 17, 1995.

Biographical Sketch

Richard P. Benedum studied with John Hamilton at the University of Oregon, where received his D.M.A. in organ performance. He also studied organ and conducting in Stuttgart, Germany, with Helmuth Rilling, and musicology with Christoph Wolff of Harvard University. His research interests include compositional process in Bach's works, and the meaning and pattern of articulation marks in Bach's autograph manuscripts, and the operas and early biographical studies of Mozart.

Dr. Benedum is the Alumni Chair in the Humanities and Professor of Music at the University of Dayton. From 1980-1988 and again from 1996-2001, he was Chair of the Department of Music. He is the founder and former music director of the Dayton Bach Society and has conducted all the major oratorios and numerous cantatas of Bach, as well as other major works from the seventeenth to the twentieth centuries. He is also an active organ recitalist and church musician.

Scope and Contents

The Dayton Bach Society Collection is divided into six series: Ticket/Programs/Publicity, Correspondence, Grants, Special Events, Financial Record/General and Oversize Posters/Publicity.

Series I: Ticket/Programs/Publicity
This series contains tickets from performances from 1978-1980. The programs included in this collection range from April 16, 1978 to February 22, 1992. Publicity is included from both newspapers and journals. This series also holds some News Releases and Public Service Announcements as well as small flyers.

Series II: Correspondence
This series is made up of correspondence and takes up two boxes. The correspondence is divided into, letters containing the DBS letterhead (1976-1987), The Dayton Foundation (1976-1991), The Seventh-day Adventist Church (1977-1989), Victory (Victoria) Theatre (1980-1991), City of Dayton (1980-1988), The Ohio Humanities Council, The University of Dayton, handwritten notes and short memos, and those with no letterhead (1974-1991). Also included is a section of correspondence with various letterhead kept in alphabetical order.

Series III: Grants
This series contains grants and grant information from the following sources: Arts Dayton, Miami Valley Arts Council, Dayton Performing Arts Fund, and the Ohio Arts Council.

Series IV: Special Events
This series contains information about special events. The events included are Meet the Composer, Mozart's Mass in C completion and the Messiah Sing-In.

Series V: Financial Record/General
This series includes financial record and general information. The financial material includes two ledgers, a computer disk, Box Office Reports, and tax forms. Also included are minutes from various meetings, documents (including the Victoria Theatre Contract), surveys and a Sing the Season! script.

Series VI: Oversize Posters/Publicity
This series contains oversize flyers and publicity.
